Mogadishu (SONNA) — The Minister of Family and Human Rights Development of the Federal Government of Somalia, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, on Sunday inaugurated a two-day workshop in Mogadishu focused on advancing Somali women’s leadership.
The forum, organized by the Somali Gender Equality Movement (SOMGEM), brought together women leaders, women’s organizations, and civil society representatives to discuss strategies for strengthening and expanding women’s roles in leadership across the country.
Speaking at the opening session, Minister Al-Makhzoumi highlighted key milestones achieved by the ministry, including the formal adoption of a 30% women’s quota in the Electoral and Political Parties laws. She also noted the approval of several landmark legislations by the Council of Ministers, such as laws addressing gender-based violence, banning female genital mutilation, and regulating family affairs — all aimed at enhancing women’s rights and protections.
The minister underscored the critical role women play in Somali society and called on participants to produce actionable recommendations that will further support the government’s ongoing efforts to empower women and promote inclusive leadership.
The workshop is expected to conclude with practical proposals to strengthen women’s participation and influence in governance and decision-making processes.
