The Federal Government of Somalia has convened the seventh quarterly meeting of the Fisheries Management and Development Council (FMDC), bringing together federal and state-level ministries alongside key stakeholders in the country’s Blue Economy sector.
Chaired by the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Ahmed Hassan Adan, the high-level forum serves as Somalia’s principal coordinating body for marine and fisheries governance, reinforcing national efforts to sustainably manage the country’s vast maritime resources.
The meeting is held under the formal framework of the FMDC, established to harmonize policies, address inter-sectoral challenges, and ensure equitable and sustainable use of marine resources. The seventh session focuses on accelerating the implementation of sustainable development policies that balance economic growth with environmental protection.
Key areas of discussion include strengthening responsible fishing practices, protecting marine habitats, enhancing livelihoods for coastal communities, and advancing the development of a regulated and transparent blue economy. These priorities are aligned with Somalia’s broader vision of leveraging its marine potential while safeguarding ecological sustainability.
A defining feature of the Council’s approach is its collective implementation mechanism, which ensures that decisions taken at the national level are jointly executed across federal and member state institutions. Agenda items, including compliance with international conservation standards and the development of localized fishery management plans, are not only deliberated but also adopted for coordinated implementation nationwide.
This unified framework enables the Federal Government and regional administrations to act in concert, reducing policy fragmentation and strengthening national cohesion in marine governance. Officials emphasized that the outcomes of the seventh quarterly meeting will be translated into concrete actions at federal, state, and community levels.
The FMDC continues to play a critical role in steering Somalia toward a sustainable and inclusive blue economy, positioning the country to maximize the benefits of its marine resources while preserving them for future generations.
