Foreign Al-Shabaab Militant Surrenders to Local Defence Forces in Bakool Region

Bakool, (SONN) — A foreign Al-Shabaab terrorist who was illegally brought into Somalia by the group has surrendered to Local Defence Forces in Quracjoome, Bakool region.

The man, who is from Ethiopia’s Oromo community and identified himself as Mufti, was given the name Omar after entering Somalia. He had been a member of Al-Shabaab for four years and one month.

The terrorist group recruits and brings foreign nationals into Somalia by misleading them and distorting the teachings of Islam. Those who join the group are often confronted with conduct and practices that contradict Islamic teachings and basic human values. This has, in some cases, led foreign fighters to escape and surrender to government forces, while others have been killed by the group after being suspected of attempting to defect.

The Somali National Armed Forces and Local Defence Forces remain committed to intensifying operations against terrorist groups that threaten the peace and stability of the country.
