NAIROBI, Kenya – The Federal Republic of Somalia has taken a prominent position on the global stage today as the 3rd Session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) officially commenced in Nairobi.

In a significant diplomatic development, Somalia is participating in this high-level session not only as a member state but in its newly elected capacity as Co-Chair of the Executive Board. This leadership role places the Federal Government at the forefront of decision-making processes regarding global urbanization and human settlement strategies.

The Somali delegation is led by the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing. Spearheading the team is H.E. Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, accompanied by Dr. Abdirahman Hmuud Ahmed Aleel, Senior Advisor and Head of Projects at the Ministry.

Over the course of the two-day session, the Somali delegation is set to play an active and pivotal role in guiding the deliberations. The Executive Board is tasked with a heavy agenda, which includes:

  • Reviewing UN-Habitat’s Progress: Assessing the implementation of current programs and financial status.

  • Shaping the Future: Deliberating on the draft Strategic Plan for 2026–2029, which will define the organization’s global priorities for the coming years.

  • Global alignment: Reviewing resolutions and decisions passed by the United Nations General Assembly relevant to human settlements.

  • WUF13 Preparations: Overseeing the preparatory work for the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), which is scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan in mid-2026.

Somalia’s active participation and co-chairmanship at this level highlight the nation’s renewed commitment to multilateralism and its dedication to addressing critical issues of housing, infrastructure reconstruction, and sustainable urban development both at home and internationally.
