Istanbul, Türkiye – The Minister of Defense of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ahmed Ma’allin Fiqi, and his Turkish counterpart, Yaşar Güler, today in Istanbul signed a crucial agreement to amend the implementation protocol for financial assistance exchanged between the two countries on July 17, 2019. This revised accord is set to deepen the strategic cooperation between Somalia and Türkiye, particularly in the realm of defense and military development.

This reconfigured agreement is an important component of ongoing efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership between Somalia and Türkiye. Its primary focus is on enhancing the capabilities of the Somali National Army through continuous training programs, provision of essential equipment, and comprehensive capacity-building initiatives. The commitment reflected in this signing aims to bolster the professionalism and effectiveness of Somalia’s armed forces in addressing national security challenges.

Minister Fiqi highlighted that the review and signing of this agreement shows the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship between Somalia and Türkiye. He emphasized the Federal Government of Somalia’s unwavering resolve to transparently and effectively leverage the fraternal support it receives from the Turkish government. This commitment ensures that the assistance is utilized in a manner that directly serves Somalia’s national interests and contributes to its long-term stability and security.

Türkiye has consistently proven to be a vital ally in Somalia’s journey towards peace and reconstruction, playing a significant role in supporting its security sector reform and broader development. This updated protocol is expected to streamline the delivery of defense aid, ensuring that resources are deployed efficiently to maximize their impact on the ground. The continued collaboration between the two nations is crucial as Somalia strives to build a robust and self-reliant national army capable of safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its citizens.

The agreement solidifies a comprehensive framework for sustained military cooperation, reflecting a shared vision for regional stability and collective security. It paves the way for deeper collaboration in defense technology, joint training exercises, and strategic planning, all geared towards empowering the Somali National Army to effectively secure its territory and contribute to broader peace efforts in the Horn of Africa.
