KIGALI (SONNA) – The Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of Rwanda opened a new chapter in their strategic partnership today after officially signing a wide-ranging General Cooperation Agreement in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.

This foundational agreement, which aims to strengthen the relationship between the two nations, was jointly signed by Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mr. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, and Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Olivier Jean Patrick Nduhungirehe.

The general agreement paves the way for expanded cooperation centered on four key pillars: strengthening diplomatic relations, promoting bilateral trade, boosting investment, and, notably, the exchange of expertise and capacity building for Somali government institutions, leveraging Rwanda’s experience in reconstruction and institutional development.

During the ministerial meeting, discussions also delved into advancing socio-economic cooperation and promoting the shared interests of the Somali and Rwandan people.

Both sides highlighted the importance of unifying their efforts to contribute to the enhancement of peace, political stability, and economic growth throughout the East Africa region.

Senior officials from both countries described the signing as a “historic step,” crucial for fostering a genuine and lasting partnership based on mutual respect and shared interests. This move is part of Somalia’s broader efforts to reinforce its diplomatic role regionally and internationally.
