Mogadishu, SONNA – The Federal Government of Somalia, in partnership with Qatar Charity, has launched on Tuesday a large-scale economic empowerment program aimed at creating sustainable livelihoods for Somali youth and low-income families. The initiative was officially inaugurated in Mogadishu during a well-attended ceremony led by Somali government officials and the Qatari diplomatic mission.
The launch ceremony was attended by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Yusuf Mohamed Adam, Deputy for Social Affairs of Banadir Regional Administration, Mr. Abdulaziz Osman Mohamed, the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Somalia, H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Salem Al Nuaimi, and the Director of Qatar Charity’s Somalia Office, Mr. Abdelfattah Adam, alongside other dignitaries.
In his keynote address, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, H.E. Yusuf Mohamed Adam, emphasized the government’s commitment to turning humanitarian assistance into sustainable development.
“We highly value Qatar Charity’s role in transforming aid into meaningful economic opportunities. This project is a significant step towards long-term economic stability and resilience for our youth,” the Minister stated.
Deputy for Social Affairs of Banadir Region, Mr. Abdulaziz Osman Mohamed, welcomed the project as a key contribution to Somalia’s socio-economic recovery:
“This initiative supports employment, boosts local enterprise, and offers a new beginning for many Somali families. We thank Qatar Charity for standing with Somalia’s development agenda.”
The program’s first phase includes the distribution of 130 cargo tricycles and 130 motorized passenger tricycles (Tuk-Tuks) to Somali youth, in addition to 100 electric flour milling machines aimed at enhancing small businesses and supporting local agricultural value chains.
Ambassador of Qatar to Somalia, H.E. Dr. Abdullah bin Salem Al Nuaimi, underlined the importance of the partnership between Somalia and Qatar, saying:
“This project reflects the deepening cooperation between our two brotherly nations and underscores Qatar’s firm commitment to supporting Somalia’s development and social stability.”
Director of Qatar Charity’s Somalia Office, Mr. Abdelfattah Adam, reiterated the organization’s mission to empower Somali youth:
“Our focus is on practical, impactful projects that equip young Somalis with tools for self-reliance and economic independence.”
The Economic Empowerment Project is part of a wider program implemented by Qatar Charity in Somalia, supporting critical sectors such as education, healthcare, water access, and livelihoods with the overarching goal of building resilient and self-reliant communities across Somalia.
