Baku, SONNA – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, His Excellency Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, met on Wednesday in Baku to sign a series of landmark agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The agreements cover key areas such as education, energy, security, and administrative development, marking a significant step forward in the partnership between Somalia and Azerbaijan.

During their discussions, the two leaders emphasized the importance of deepening ties and exploring new avenues for collaboration. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud highlighted the potential for mutual growth, stating, “These agreements represent a new era of cooperation between Somalia and Azerbaijan. They will not only enhance our bilateral relations but also contribute to the development and prosperity of both nations.”

Key Areas of Cooperation

  1. Education and Research:
The two countries signed agreements to promote educational cooperation, including the provision of scholarships for Somali students to study in Azerbaijan. The partnership will also focus on fostering research and innovation, enabling knowledge exchange and capacity building.
  2. Energy Development:
Azerbaijan has pledged to support Somalia in developing its energy sector, particularly in the fields of oil, gas, and renewable energy. This collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in addressing Somalia’s energy needs and promoting sustainable development.
  3. Security and Defense:
Somalia and Azerbaijan agreed to enhance cooperation in military training, counterterrorism efforts, and the development of security institutions. These initiatives aim to strengthen Somalia’s capacity to maintain peace and stability.
  4. Public Administration and Governance:
The agreements also focus on modernizing public administration and accelerating the delivery of public services. Azerbaijan will share its expertise in governance and institutional development to support Somalia’s efforts to improve transparency and efficiency.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Both leaders emphasized the importance of establishing a permanent platform to facilitate the implementation of the signed agreements and ensure sustained collaboration. President Ilham Aliyev expressed Azerbaijan’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s development, stating, “Azerbaijan is proud to partner with Somalia in these critical areas. We are confident that this cooperation will yield positive results for both our nations.”

In a gesture of goodwill, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud invited President Ilham Aliyev to pay an official visit to Somalia. The invitation reflects Somalia’s desire to further strengthen bilateral ties and explore additional opportunities for partnership.

The agreements signed in Baku mark a milestone in Somalia’s efforts to expand its international partnerships and secure support for its development agenda. The collaboration with Azerbaijan is expected to bring tangible benefits to both countries, fostering mutual growth and prosperity.
