The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, welcomed the UK Defense Minister, James Stephen Heappey, who arrived in Mogadishu for an official visit on Saturday.
The two leaders discussed the security situation in Somalia, the achievements of the Somali Armed Forces, and the ongoing fight against terrorism. President Mohamud highlighted the recent lifting of the arms embargo on Somalia, which he said was a sign of the country’s progress and stability.
He also expressed his gratitude to the UK for its support in training and equipping the Somali forces, who are preparing to take full charge of the country’s security after the withdrawal of the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Minister Heappey commended the Somali people and government for their remarkable efforts in restoring peace and stability in the country. He reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to continue working with Somalia in the areas of defense and counter-terrorism. He also praised the cooperation between the two countries, which he said was based on mutual respect and shared interests.
