Nairobi, SONNA – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Nairobi, Kenya on Wednesday to participate in the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), the world’s highest-level environmental forum.
The president was welcomed by Kenya’s deputy president Rigathi Gachagua in Kenya, defense minister Aden Duale, and other government officials at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The president and his delegation will join global leaders and representatives from civil society, private sector, and academia to discuss urgent environmental issues and actions to address the climate crisis.
The theme of UNEA-6 is “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. The assembly will focus on topics such as biodiversity loss, pollution, waste management, and green recovery.
President Mohamud is expected to deliver a statement at the opening plenary of the assembly on Thursday, highlighting Somalia’s efforts and challenges in implementing environmental policies and programs.
The president will also hold bilateral meetings with other heads of state and government, as well as UN officials, to strengthen cooperation and partnership on environmental matters.
UNEA-6 is running from February 26 to March 1, 2024, at the UNEP headquarters in Nairobi.
