Mogadishu, (SONNA): December 20 marks a significant national day in Somalia as the country commemorates the establishment of the Somali Police Force. This force, founded in 1943, has played a crucial role in defending the nation and contributing to the freedom and security of its people.
The Somali Police Force, recognized as one of the most advanced military units at its inception, was essential in the establishment of a Somali state that stands alongside the international community. The duties performed by the police are enshrined in the country’s constitution, reflecting their dedication to tackling various challenges, including fighting crime, combating terrorism, defending the nation, ensuring internal security, and upholding national and international law.
As the highest civil law enforcement agency, the Somali Police Force maintains a strong partnership with the International Police Organization (Interpol). Over the years, the force has demonstrated bravery and pride, achieving victories in the wars of 1964 and 1977, which reclaimed territories from foreign colonialists.
Despite the challenges posed by the country’s collapse in 1991, efforts to regroup and reactivate the police units and commands since the 2000s have been successful. The inclusion of new recruits has further bolstered the restoration of security and order.
This year’s commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the Somali Police Force highlights its foundational role as the oldest military force in the country. The Somali people continue to express their satisfaction with the police’s performance and their contributions to national development.
The police, being the second power that society is proud of, are diligently working to restore security. There is a pressing need to enhance their capabilities through improved military equipment, tools, and training to ensure they can achieve comprehensive security in the near future.
As a companion of the people, the police force relies on the support and cooperation of the Somali citizens to restore stability and order. It is fitting for the Somali people to work together with the police to achieve these goals.
Finally, we extend our best wishes to all officers, deputy officers, soldiers, and their families. May this year bring further progress and prosperity for the Somali Police Force and the nation as a whole.
