MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Somali Police Chief, Brigadier General Asad Osman Abdullahi, and the US Ambassador to Somalia, Ambassador Richard H. Riley, reaffirmed their commitment to addressing the ongoing security challenges in the country. The discussion focused on eradicating the extremist group Khawarij, enhancing the Somali police force, and planning the transition of security responsibilities from the African Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to local police forces.
The meeting, described as highly fruitful, highlighted the strong partnership between Somalia and the United States. Both leaders emphasized the critical role of the US in supporting Somalia’s efforts to stabilize and secure its territories. Brigadier General Abdullahi highlighted the importance of international collaboration in the fight against terrorism and the necessity of building a robust police force capable of maintaining order and safety.
Ambassador Riley reiterated the US’s total support for Somalia’s sovereignty and its commitment to aiding in the transition process as ATMIS phases out. The discussion also included strategic plans to enhance police capabilities and ensure effective management of security in the newly transferred areas.
“The United States is an important ally of Somalia and plays a significant role in supporting efforts to help Somalia regain its footing,” remarked Brigadier General Abdullahi. The partnership aims to fortify Somalia’s security apparatus and contribute to long-term peace and stability.
