Mogadishu, Somalia – The Commander of the Somali Navy and Coastal Defense, Admiral Abdi Warsame, attended the Milan 2024 Summit in India, a multilateral naval exercise and conference that brought together more than 50 countries from around the world.

The summit, which was held from 19 to 27 February 2024, aimed to enhance maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region, as well as to exchange best practices and experiences among the participating navies.

Admiral Warsame also met with his Indian counterpart, Admiral Karambir Singh, the Chief of the Naval Staff of India, and discussed the bilateral relations and cooperation between the Somali Navy and the Indian Navy.

The two naval chiefs agreed to strengthen their collaboration in areas such as anti-piracy operations, maritime domain awareness, capacity building, and training.

India has been a key partner of Somalia in the maritime security domain, as it has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since 2008, and has also provided humanitarian assistance, scholarships, and technical support to Somalia.

The Milan 2024 Summit was the 13th edition of the biennial event, which was first hosted by India in 1995. The summit also featured a naval parade, a cultural program, and a seminar on the theme of “Building Bridges of Friendship”.
