Somali Ministers Express Concern Over Imported Produce, Urge Support for Local Farmers

Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mahmoud Adan Geesood, and the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye), jointly visited a warehouse of imported goods at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu today. They expressed concern over the importation of produce that can be grown locally, such as lemons, bananas, cucumbers, lettuce, and onions.

The ministers stated that importing such crops harms the economy of Somali farmers and domestic production. They instructed the Somali Bureau of Standards to control the entry of substandard goods, especially crops that naturally grow within the country, and emphasized the importance of maintaining the quality of imported goods to ensure public health and domestic economic growth.

The ministers urged Somali traders and the public to prioritize domestic production, as a step towards strengthening self-sufficiency, patriotism, and the country’s development.
