The Commander of the Somali National Army, Major General Ibrahim Sheikh Muhuddin, participated in a meeting of the commanders of the military forces of the coalition of Islamic countries in the fight against terrorism, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday.
The meeting, which was attended by the member governments of the Islamic Alliance to fight terrorism and the governments that support it, focused on the long-term plan to combat terrorism and extremism in the region and the world.
The meeting also discussed the achievements and challenges of the coalition, which was established in 2015 and is united by 45 countries, in its efforts to eradicate terrorist groups and their ideology.
The Somali Army Chief expressed his gratitude to the coalition for its support to Somalia in its war against the Khawarij, a term used to refer to the al-Shabaab militants, who have been waging a violent insurgency in the country for over a decade.
He also briefed the meeting on the successes achieved by the Somali National Army and its allies in liberating several areas from the Khawarij and restoring peace and stability to the country.
After the meeting, the Somali Army Chief held a prayer meeting with the commanders of the armed forces of Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Djibouti, and the General Secretary of the Islamic Alliance, and exchanged views on the security and cooperation among the Islamic states.
The meeting of the commanders of the military forces of the coalition of Islamic countries in the fight against terrorism was part of a series of events organized by the Islamic Alliance to mark its sixth anniversary and to showcase its achievements and future plans.
