Mogadishu, Somalia,SONNA-The Federal Republic of Somalia has successfully repatriated 47 Somali nationals stranded in Madagascar, utilizing a specially chartered flight personally authorized by His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This decisive action underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting its citizens, wherever they may be, and addressing the challenges posed by human trafficking. Tragically, the perilous journey that left these citizens stranded claimed the lives of 28 Somali nationals, highlighting the devastating consequences of irregular migration.

The initiative was led by Abdulqadir Mahmud Yussuf (Burgal), the Director of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Jibril Abdi from the Office of the Attorney General. The delegation traveled to Madagascar to oversee the operation, ensuring the safe return of the stranded citizens.

“This mission demonstrates that Somalia has a government that prioritizes the rights and dignity of its citizens,” said Burgal. “We are committed to ensuring that Somali nationals stranded abroad are repatriated safely, without reliance on external assistance. This initiative, spearheaded by the Federal Government, reflects our determination to care for our people. We extend our deepest gratitude to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, whose leadership and decision to dispatch a plane ensured the safe return of these Somali youths from Madagascar.”

The repatriation forms part of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s broader vision to voluntarily repatriate Somali nationals stranded abroad, reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens globally.

The Federal Government strongly condemns the human traffickers responsible for this tragedy and is pursuing legal action against them. It is also strengthening measures to prevent such incidents and urges Somali citizens to remain vigilant against the dangers of irregular migration and the deceptive tactics of traffickers.

As Somalia mourns the 28 lives lost, the government extends its heartfelt condolences to their families and reaffirms its commitment to justice and the protection of its people.
