In a highly significant address to the United Nations Security Council, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia focused on the current situation, security, and the eradication of extremism in the country. Speaking at a special session on Somalia, President Mohamud emphasized that Somalia in 2023 is vastly different from the Somalia of 1992, highlighting the progress made over the years.

President Mohamud stressed the crucial need for lifting the arms embargo on Somalia to effectively combat terrorism and restore stability. He underscored the importance of defeating the extremist group Al-Shabaab and enforcing the rule of law in the country. The President requested a total lifting of the decades-long arms embargo and called on the Council to support Somalia’s efforts in combating terrorism.

During the meeting, President Mohamud also shed light on the ongoing military operations aimed at liberating territories under Al-Shabaab control. With support from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti, the second phase of these operations aims to reclaim and secure areas held by the extremist group. The President emphasized the importance of international cooperation and assistance in achieving this objective.

In a related development, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, Catriona Laing, highlighted the significant progress achieved during her recent visit to Somalia. Describing her trip as the most encouraging in the past twelve years, Special Representative Laing emphasized the country’s remarkable advancements in governance and security.

Special Representative Laing’s address to the Security Council focused on Somalia’s positive trajectory. She praised the country’s progress and stability, highlighting the efforts made in strengthening governance and security. Her remarks served as an affirmation of the collective efforts made by the Somali government and international partners to bring about positive change in the country.

The speeches by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Special Representative Catriona Laing underscored the importance of continued support from the international community in addressing security challenges, combating terrorism, and achieving lasting stability in Somalia. The lifting of the arms embargo, as advocated by President Mohamud, holds significant potential in bolstering Somalia’s efforts in these areas. As discussions continue, it is expected that the Security Council and international partners will carefully consider the progress made and explore avenues for further collaboration to ensure Somalia’s sustained development and security.
