MOGADISHU – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud addressed the nation after Friday prayers, speaking on a range of critical issues including national security, the government’s efforts to regulate public land, and recent security incidents in the capital. In a firm and direct message, the President credited the improved security in Mogadishu to the profound sacrifices of many Somalis and called on the public to protect those gains.
“The improvement in Mogadishu’s security did not happen on its own; many Somalis sacrificed their blood for it,” President Mohamud stated. “I ask you not to allow us to return to where we came from. We must protect the security and development of the capital.”
The President also spoke about the recent security breach at a police station in the Warta Nabada district, where armed individuals reportedly attacked the facility. President Mohamud confirmed that the individuals involved were awaiting trial, as they had violated the rights of Somali citizens. He sent a strong message that the government will not tolerate any actions that undermine law and order.
In a powerful statement aimed at reinforcing the government’s monopoly on the use of force, the President banned the unauthorized use of heavy weapons within the city. He made it clear that carrying such weapons in a celebratory or ostentatious manner is strictly prohibited. The President used his own position as an example of this policy. “As the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, I have given up vehicles mounted with heavy weapons,” he said. “It is forbidden for anyone to show off with heavy weapons in Mogadishu.”
President Mohamud’s remarks come at a pivotal time for the country, as the government continues to work towards stabilizing the capital and extending state authority. His message is a clear sign that the government is committed to ensuring the safety of its citizens and will take all necessary measures to prevent any backsliding on security. The statement also reflects the government’s serious approach to holding all individuals accountable under the law, regardless of their status.
