Somalia has officially become the newest member of the East African Community (EAC), a regional intergovernmental organization of seven countries. The announcement was made at the 23rd Summit of the Heads of State of the EAC member states, held in Arusha, Tanzania, on November 24, 2023.

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was officially granted membership for Somalia, which was unanimously accepted by the other EAC leaders. He expressed his gratitude and honor at joining the organization, which he believes marks a milestone for a better future, as well as opportunities and capabilities for Somali society.

“Today, as we turn a new page in Somalia’s history, I am honored to stand before you as we officially become members of the East African Community. This alone does not reflect our ambition, but it is a milestone for a better future, opportunities and capabilities for our society. We have joined this country to strengthen our friendship, participate in the collective progress, and choose a better future for the peoples of the region,” he said.

The President highlighted the efforts he has made since 2016 to join the EAC, as it is an opportunity for the Somali people to access the global market, business opportunities and travel facilities. He also praised the experts and diplomats who worked to convince the EAC member states to accept Somalia’s request.

He also presented the benefits that the peoples and countries of East Africa have in Somalia joining, as it is a fertile country, a strategic location, and its people are eager for trade in the continent.

The EAC is composed of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, DRC, Tanzania and Uganda. It aims to promote regional cooperation in various sectors, such as trade, infrastructure, security, health, education, culture and environment. The EAC also has a vision of establishing a political federation of the East African states.

The EAC Secretary General, Dr. Peter Mathuki, welcomed Somalia as the eighth member of the organization, and congratulated the Somali government and people for their achievement. He said that Somalia’s membership will enhance the integration and development of the region, and foster peace and stability.

“We are delighted to have Somalia as part of our family. Somalia is a rich and diverse country, with a long history and culture. Somalia’s membership will bring more value and strength to the EAC, and will contribute to the realization of our common goals and aspirations. We look forward to working closely with Somalia to advance the EAC agenda and to benefit from its potential and opportunities,” he said.
