Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Daud Aweis Jama received the UNESCO Regional Representative for Eastern Africa, Ms. Louise Haxthausen, at his office in Mogadishu to discuss ongoing cooperation and future initiatives.
Minister Aweis expressed his appreciation for UNESCO’s longstanding partnership with the Federal Government of Somalia, highlighting the deep-rooted and enduring collaboration between the two sides.
A key focus of the discussion was the Somali government’s commitment to modernizing the extensive archives of Radio Mogadishu, which span over 70 years of historical and cultural recordings. The Minister emphasized the importance of digitizing the collection to preserve it for future generations and make it accessible through modern technology.
The two sides also explored ways to strengthen cultural programs that promote youth employment and use Somalia’s rich cultural heritage as a foundation for social cohesion and reconciliation.
Ms. Haxthausen commended the Ministry’s dedication to preserving national heritage and expressed strong support for the digitization of Radio Mogadishu’s archives, describing it as a vital step toward safeguarding Somalia’s historical and cultural legacy. She affirmed UNESCO’s readiness to contribute significantly to the project.
Following their meeting, the Minister and the UNESCO delegation visited the Radio Mogadishu archives to assess the historical materials firsthand. Minister Aweis briefed the visitors on the ministry’s roadmap for preservation and modernization efforts aimed at protecting this national treasure for future Somali generations.
The meeting was also attended by the Director General of the Ministry, Mr. Abdullahi Hayir Ducaale, along with other senior officials.
