Belém, Brazil (SONNA) — The Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Federal Government of Somalia, Brig. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, delivered a comprehensive address today at the High-Level Segment of the UNFCCC COP30 conference, taking place in Belém, Brazil.
In his remarks, the Minister reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to accelerating climate action, advancing clear plans to reduce the impacts of climate change, and strengthening international cooperation. He expressed gratitude to the Government of Brazil and the UNFCCC Secretariat for hosting the crucial global gathering.
Minister Bashir highlighted the significant progress Somalia has made in implementing its NDC 3.0, which aligns fully with the National Transformation Plan (NTP) and the National Adaptation Plan (NAP). He noted that Somalia has officially launched the NAP, the NDC 3.0 Investment Plan, and the Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS), outlining a resilient, low-carbon, and sustainable future for the country.
Addressing loss and damage, the Minister underscored Somalia’s determination to confront the direct impacts of climate change, which threaten lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems.
His speech centered on three key messages:
- The need for climate justice and equity
- Strengthening support for adaptation
- Turning global commitments into concrete actions that improve people’s lives
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change reiterated its dedication to transparent and collaborative efforts aimed at delivering effective climate action that safeguards communities and ensures a sustainable future for Somalia.
