Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – Iraq’s Minister of Interior, H.E. Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, arrived in Mogadishu today for high-level talks with Somali officials. The visiting delegation was warmly received at Aden Adde International Airport by Somalia’s Minister of Interior, Federalism and Reconciliation, MP Ali Yusuf Ali (Xoosh), along with the Minister of Internal Security, the Governor of Banadir Region, and other senior security officials.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre held extensive discussions with the Iraqi minister, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of security and counterterrorism. “This visit marks an important step in strengthening the historic ties between our brotherly nations,” stated PM Hamza, emphasizing Somalia’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Iraq. Minister Al-Shammari reaffirmed Iraq’s support, pledging to boost collaboration in security sector training, intelligence sharing, and counterterrorism strategies.
The meetings come at a critical time as Somalia continues its fight against extremist groups. Iraq’s extensive experience in combating terrorism and stabilizing post-conflict security sectors is expected to provide valuable insights for Somali forces. Both nations are set to establish concrete frameworks for security cooperation, including specialized training programs and technical assistance in border management.
This landmark visit shows the growing international support for Somalia’s security sector reform and represents a major step forward in regional counterterrorism efforts. Observers note that the partnership could significantly enhance Somalia’s capacity to address security challenges, with more detailed agreements expected to be announced in the coming days.
The Iraqi delegation’s itinerary includes visits to key security installations and further meetings with Somali defense and intelligence officials before concluding their official visit.
