Kampala (SONNA) — The Head of Somali Civil Society Organizations, Osman Moallim Shatah, has participated in a two-day conference held in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, focusing on preparations for the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for January 15, 2026.
Speaking on the sidelines of the conference, Shatah said he is taking part as a member of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) election observation mission, which is mandated to monitor and oversee the electoral process as part of regional efforts to support democratic governance and promote transparency and credibility in elections.
He noted that his role also includes contributing to the verification of election results in coordination with observer missions from the African Union (AU) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), with the aim of ensuring that electoral procedures adhere to internationally recognized standards.
The participation highlights the growing role of civil society organizations in advancing political stability, strengthening democratic practices, and enhancing regional cooperation among countries in East Africa and the Horn of Africa.
