Accra, Ghana, SONNA – Ghana has donated a consignment of 40 metric tonnes of chocolate and cocoa products to the people of Palestine, particularly to those affected by the ongoing hardship in Gaza. The donation, consisting of Ghana’s premium Golden Tree brand, was presented during a ceremony on Friday, where officials from both nations and international bodies were present.
President John Dramani Mahama, speaking at the Presidency, framed the donation as more than just a charitable act. He stated that the initiative served to “reaffirm our fraternal ties with Palestine” and to provide a “small yet heartfelt way to respond to the humanitarian needs of the people of Gaza.” The President described cocoa, one of Ghana’s most cherished commodities, as a “powerful superfood” rich in antioxidants and vitamins, emphasizing its role in providing sustenance and promoting health. He also highlighted its importance to the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaian farmers.
The ceremony also served as a platform for President Mahama to reiterate Ghana’s diplomatic stance on the Palestinian question. He expressed the country’s long-standing support for a two-state solution, in line with international law and UN resolutions, and called for all parties to “embrace diplomacy, commit to dialogue, and end the cycle of violence.” The President specifically urged Israeli authorities to open the borders to allow for a swift and unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
The President’s remarks underscored the historical connection between Ghana and Palestine, noting that relations have been maintained since the Palestinian Liberation Organisation opened an office in Accra in 1986. He also praised the Palestinian community in Ghana for their civic contributions, citing their efforts in building classroom blocks in underserved communities.
The event, which saw the attendance of Palestinian Ambassador Abdul Fattah Ahmed Khalil al-Satay, United Nations officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and various government officials, culminated with a message of unwavering support. “To our friends and brothers and sisters in Palestine, please know that you will not walk alone. Ghana stands in solidarity with you,” President Mahama said, describing the donation as a “symbol of our enduring friendship and our solidarity.” The logistical coordination for this act of goodwill was handled by the Ghana Cocoa Board, the Cocoa Processing Company, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
