London, (SONNA) – The Federal Government of Somalia’s Minister of Finance, H.E. Bihi Iman Igeh, has been awarded the prestigious African Finance Minister of the Year 2025 award at a ceremony held in London.
The award recognizes Minister Bihi’s exceptional leadership during his two-year tenure at the helm of Somalia’s Ministry of Finance. His efforts in advancing public financial reform, spearheading the country’s successful debt relief process in 2023, and modernizing domestic revenue systems were highlighted as key achievements. These reforms led to significant increases in domestic revenue and strengthened Somalia’s financial governance.
Minister Bihi also played a central role in post-debt-relief planning and positioned Somalia as a model for other nations pursuing financial restructuring. Under his leadership, Somalia avoided new unsustainable debts and instead secured grant-based financing from international financial institutions—a shift that has since inspired similar approaches in other African countries.
In his acceptance speech, Minister Biixi dedicated the award to the people of Somalia, whom he described as the true drivers of the country’s economic recovery. He also praised Somali entrepreneurs for their resilience and continued investment in the country’s reconstruction despite ongoing challenges.
“This recognition belongs to the Somali people,” said the Minister. “Their determination and commitment to rebuilding our economy are the foundation of our progress.”
