MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM Somalia) officially commemorated its 16th anniversary this week, reaffirming its aggressive commitment to developing highly capable, accountable Somali Security Forces. Since its initial deployment on April 7, 2010, the mission has operated continuously to professionalize the national defense sector. Currently executing its ninth mandate, EUTM Somalia provides critical strategic advice, advanced mentoring, and specialized capacity building tailored directly to the priorities of the Federal Government of Somalia.
The mission has substantially escalated its operational tempo over the past year. Recent internal metrics demonstrate a massive 68 percent increase in training courses organized in 2025, alongside a 90 percent surge in the number of active trainees compared to the previous mandate. This rapid expansion reflects a broadened programmatic reach and highly synchronized collaboration with international defense partners. By continuously aligning its training modules with Somali-defined defense needs, EUTM Somalia directly supports the national strategy to transition full security responsibilities to domestic forces.
Operating under the guiding principle of “One Team, One Loop, One Mission,” the European Union continues to lay the essential foundation for sustainable, locally led security solutions. The training apparatus focuses heavily on producing future trainers, advising national command and control structures, and ensuring absolute compliance with the rule of law. As the Somali National Armed Forces intensify their localized clearance operations against Khawaarij militants, the advanced tactical and leadership capabilities fostered by EUTM Somalia remain critical to maintaining battlefield superiority and executing long-term territorial stabilization.
