MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Director of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), H.E. Abdiweli Ali Abdulle (Timacadde), convened a high-level strategic meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Somalia, H.E. Wang Yu. The bilateral engagement focused on accelerating the deployment of Somalia’s modern National Identification System and expanding technological cooperation between the two nations.
The dialogue centered on the operational progress NIRA has achieved in establishing a secure, digitized national registry. Director Abdiweli detailed the critical phases of the ID rollout, highlighting the system’s function as a core component of state-building. The national identification infrastructure is designed to fortify internal security, streamline the delivery of public services, and integrate Somali citizens into the formal economic sector.
To ensure the long-term viability and technical superiority of this infrastructure, the two officials established a framework for robust technological cooperation. This partnership will facilitate direct, operational engagement between NIRA and corresponding state agencies within the People’s Republic of China.
The collaboration will prioritize the exchange of institutional knowledge, advanced digitalization strategies, and the transfer of critical technological capabilities to Somali personnel. By aligning with Chinese expertise in mass data management and digital infrastructure, the Federal Government aims to expedite the modernization of its civic registry and ensure the system meets rigorous international standards.
