Mogadishu (SONNA) – The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Abdifatah Qasim Mahmoud, has outlined preparations for the upcoming Independence Week celebrations following the first meeting of the national organizing committee.
Speaking after the meeting held on Sunday evening, the Minister said the gathering focused on planning activities for Somalia’s Independence Week and assigning responsibilities to various ministerial subcommittees.
“Tonight, on 7 June 2026, the organizing committee for the upcoming Independence Week convened and distributed responsibilities and tasks among several ministerial subcommittees,” he said.
Minister Abdifatah also called on Somalis at home and abroad to prepare for the national celebrations marking the country’s historic independence milestones.
He noted that the commemorations will begin on 26 June, marking the independence of the northern regions, and conclude on 1 July, the date on which the southern regions gained independence and united with the north to form the Somali Republic.
“We call upon the Somali people wherever they are to prepare for the Independence Week celebrations, which will run from 26 June to 1 July. These are significant days in the history and struggle of the Somali people. June 26 marks the independence of the northern regions, while July 1 commemorates the independence of the south and the union of the northern and southern regions,” he said.
Somalia is preparing to commemorate these historic dates, which symbolize the sacrifices and struggles that paved the way for the country’s independence and national unity.
