Mogadishu, Somalia โ 1 June 2026 โ The National Communications Authority (NCA), in collaboration with the Academy of Science, Culture and Literature and the Regional Somali Language Academy (AGA), today launched the Somali Cybersecurity Terminology Glossary during an event held at the Regional Somali Language Academy. The initiative aims to develop and standardize Somali-language terminology related to cybersecurity.
The event brought together government officials, academics, language experts, technology specialists, and other distinguished guests.
Opening the event, Mr Abdifitah Ahmed Abukar (Foodcade), Acting Director General of the Academy of Science, Culture and Literature, spoke about the need for the Somali language to keep pace with modern technological developments.โLanguage is the home of knowledge. If our language does not evolve alongside scientific and technological Advancements, it becomes difficult for society to fully benefit from emerging opportunities. This terminology initiative forms part of wider efforts to strengthen the Somali language, improve public services, and enhance public awareness,โ he said.
Prof. Abdalla Omar Mansur, Acting Chairman of the Regional Somali Language Academy (AGA), emphasized the role of terminology development in advancing the Somali language and supporting scientific knowledge.
โTerminology is what enables a language to support scientific and technical knowledge. New terms should be developed through a standardized process, avoiding literal translations and building on previous Somali language development efforts. This ensures that the language remains capable of accommodating new knowledge and emerging disciplines,โ he said.
The Director General of the National Communications Authority, Mr Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, stated that the initiative represents an important step towards strengthening the use of Somali in cybersecurity. โA standardized Somali cybersecurity terminology framework will support the development of laws, regulations, policies, academic materials, and public awareness resources related to cybersecurity. It will also help students, parents, and the wider public better understand concepts and risks associated with the digital world,โ said Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh.
Mr Mustafa further noted that the glossary would facilitate the translation of academic articles, books, and other technology-related materials, helping to expand access to knowledge and increase public engagement in digital matters.
The launch of the Somali Cybersecurity Terminology Glossary forms part of ongoing efforts to promote the development of the Somali language and ensure that Somali society can easily understand and engage with emerging concepts and terminology related to cybersecurity, technology, and the digital transformation shaping the modern world.
