Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Commander of the Banaadir Regional Police Division, Col. Mahdi Omar, has strongly condemned what he described as attempts by former political leaders to create instability in the capital, Mogadishu, warning that anyone involved in undermining public security will be held accountable.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Col. Mahdi said security agencies had observed efforts by certain former politicians to “distort the security situation” in the capital and push Mogadishu back toward instability and violence.
“It is unfortunate that former leaders are thinking about bringing militia forces into the capital and creating chaos and insecurity among civilians,” he said, describing such actions as “deeply regrettable.”
The police commander also accused some politicians of politicizing ongoing security operations being carried out across Mogadishu’s 95 districts. According to him, intelligence reports had indicated that members of terrorist groups were hiding in neighborhoods within Deyniile district, prompting intensified security measures.
Referring to unrest reported in the Soobe area earlier in the day, Col. Mahdi alleged that a political figure had gathered armed youths and deployed them among civilians, but praised security forces for showing restraint in order to protect the public.
“We call on Somali citizens to stay away from gatherings and mobilizations intended to disrupt the security of the capital,” he said.
Col. Mahdi concluded by issuing a stern warning to individuals organizing activities deemed harmful to Mogadishu’s security, stressing that anyone responsible for inciting violence or disorder would face legal consequences.
