MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (SONNA) — The Federal Government of Somalia has activated high-level containment and preventative protocols in response to the escalating epidemiological threat landscape in Central and East Africa, . The Acting Minister and Minister of State for Health, Dr. Maryama Mohamed Hussein, alongside Deputy Minister Dr. Mohamed Hassan Bulaale, chaired an emergency coordination summit today at the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (PHEOC), housed within the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Mogadishu.
The high-level intervention aims to insulate the Federal Republic from the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain following confirmed outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The multi-sectoral assembly brought together the Director General of the NIH, leadership from the Somali Private Hospitals Association, and key international technical partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Africa Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET).
The tactical objectives of the summit focus directly on strengthening the country’s early-warning alert architecture and fortifying screening operations at critical international points of entry, including airports, seaports, and land borders. Key resolutions passed during the session include upgrading regional diagnostic laboratory capabilities, streamlining national disease-surveillance reporting structures, and standardizing Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols. The Ministry has ordered the immediate stockpile and verification of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across all tier-one public and private medical facilities.
To ensure rapid execution, the emergency summit concluded with the signing of a binding Operational Timeline Matrix. The Ministry of Health has mandated a strict three-day deadline for the rollout of an immediate localized response framework, followed by a comprehensive seven-day national readiness execution plan. Dr. Maryama Mohamed Hussein commended the frontline epidemiological teams, reiterating that the federal government remains fully prepared to deploy all necessary state and security resources to defend the nation’s public health perimeters.
