Cairo, Egypt(SONNA)-The Federal Republic of Somalia, represented by the Director of the Somali National News Agency (SONNA), Ismail Mukhtar Omar “Oronjo,” is participating in the High-Level Global South Media and Think Tank Forum taking place in Cairo, Egypt.
The forum is jointly organized by China’s Xinhua News Agency and the League of Arab States, bringing together senior officials, media leaders, and policy experts from across the Global South.
The opening session was attended by Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, President of Xinhua News Agency Fu Hua, and Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang, alongside prominent regional and international participants.
Somalia’s participation is seen as an important step toward strengthening the country’s voice in international media platforms and advancing discussions on how Global South nations can develop balanced media narratives that support peace and development.
The forum, running from May 12 to 13, focuses on issues including peaceful development, diverse narratives, digital innovation, and mutual learning among civilizations. Participants are also discussing technological transformation in journalism and opportunities for professional cooperation between Arab and Chinese media institutions.
Officials say Somalia aims to benefit from the exchange of technical expertise and partnerships that can contribute to modernizing the country’s media sector and enhancing national communication capabilities.
