GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — The Federal Government of Somalia continues to consolidate its diplomatic standing on the global stage following a highly productive bilateral meeting in Geneva between the Minister of Family and Human Rights Development, Amb. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, and the United Kingdom’s Ambassador for Human Rights, Eleanor Sanders. The executive session focused heavily on expanding the strategic partnership between Mogadishu and London, with a specific mandate to accelerate and institutionalize the recent human rights advancements achieved by the Somali federal administration.
During the diplomatic exchange, Ambassador Sanders formally commended the Somali government for its sustained and measurable progress in human rights development. The UK delegation specifically highlighted the successful establishment of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, viewing it as a critical institutional milestone for the country. Furthermore, the British envoy praised the historic bilateral accord signed just yesterday in Geneva between the Somali Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). This agreement fundamentally aligns Somalia’s domestic frameworks with international human rights standards.
In her address to the UK delegation, Minister Al-Makhzoumi expressed appreciation for the continuous diplomatic and structural support provided by the United Kingdom. She emphasized that the strategic coordination between her ministry and international partners like the UK is essential for maintaining the momentum of Somalia’s state-building process. The dialogue concluded with both officials reaffirming their mutual commitment to securing tangible, long-term improvements in the protection and promotion of human rights across the Horn of Africa.
