MOGADISHU (SONNA) — The Federal Government of Somalia officially transferred the executive leadership of the National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRI) today. During a formal handover ceremony conducted in Mogadishu, Liban Abdi Igal officially assumed the mandate as the new Commissioner, succeeding the outgoing director, Ahmed Hussein Elmi.
The administrative transition was strictly overseen by the Deputy Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, H.E. Abdihakim Ashkir. Addressing the delegation, the Deputy Minister clearly mapped out the high-stakes national responsibilities entrusted to the NCRI. He directed the new leadership to prioritize operational continuity and aggressive inter-agency coordination, ensuring that the state’s intervention strategies rapidly and effectively reach vulnerable refugee and internally displaced populations.
Securing long-term solutions for displacement remains a core security and developmental objective of the federal government. Deputy Minister Ashkir emphasized that the agency must operate with absolute transparency and rigorous accountability to successfully execute these goals. He formally acknowledged the structural advancements achieved under the outgoing leadership and issued a direct mandate to Commissioner Igal to accelerate the agency’s field operations. This leadership transition is engineered to expand critical public services to marginalized demographics and advance the national resettlement and urban integration framework.
