Nairobi (SONNA)-The Somali National Climate Fund has officially launched a high-level training program in Nairobi, Kenya, aimed at strengthening Somalia’s capacity to access international climate financing.
The Green Climate Fund Direct Access Accreditation Training Programme, organized in partnership with the Green Climate Fund, brings together key national institutions and stakeholders to enhance their readiness for direct accreditation. The initiative focuses on equipping Somali institutions with the knowledge and systems required to independently access and manage climate funds.
Among the participating institutions are the Ministry of Finance Somalia and the Somali Development and Reconstruction Bank, both of which have been nominated for the accreditation process. Additional national stakeholders with potential to pursue accreditation are also taking part.
The training covers critical areas including fiduciary standards, environmental and social safeguards, gender considerations, institutional readiness, and the accreditation pathway. It also provides a platform for dialogue and collaboration, enabling institutions to align their strategies and strengthen coordination.
Officials say the program marks a significant step toward building a robust climate finance framework in Somalia, empowering national institutions to take the lead in securing and effectively utilizing climate funding opportunities.
Participants and partners were commended for their commitment to advancing Somalia’s climate resilience and ensuring the country is better positioned to benefit from global climate finance mechanisms.
