Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania Forge Tripartite Mining Cooperation in Cape Town

CAPE TOWN (SONNA) — The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Dahir Shire Mohamed, held high-level trilateral talks in Cape Town with his counterparts from the Republic of Kenya and the United Republic of Tanzania. The strategic dialogue took place on the sidelines of the Mining Investment Conference, where the leaders gathered to discuss the future of the continent’s extractive industries.

Minister Dahir Shire Mohamed was joined by the Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, H.E. Hassan Ali Joho, and the Tanzanian Minister of Minerals, Hon. Anthony Peter Mavunde. The meeting served as a platform for the three East African nations to align their strategies regarding the vast investment opportunities available within their respective borders.

The ministers engaged in a comprehensive review of the mineral wealth and natural resources that define the region. They explored specific avenues for establishing a robust tripartite cooperation framework designed to enhance the exploration, management, and utilization of these resources. The discussion emphasized that a united regional approach could significantly increase the attractiveness of East Africa to global investors.

A primary focus of the talks was the acceleration of foreign direct investment into the mining sector. The leaders agreed on the necessity of increasing domestic value addition to ensure that the economic benefits of resource extraction—such as job creation and infrastructure development—are retained within their countries. They further committed to ensuring that all resource management initiatives are conducted sustainably and equitably, driving long-term economic prosperity for their nations and the wider African continent.
