Mogadishu, SONNA — Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre chaired a high-level meeting today to discuss the introduction and fast-tracking of the Mogadishu Waterway Project, a flagship national initiative aimed at addressing flooding, improving urban infrastructure, and enhancing the capital’s readiness for investment.

During the meeting, detailed briefings were presented by the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, the Banadir Regional Administration, and technical experts from the NAGAAD Project. The presentations focused on the Waterway’s master plan, including its technical design, scope, implementation phases, and the modern technologies to be deployed.

The Governor of Banadir Region, Mr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein, informed the meeting that the reopening of previously blocked old water pipes has already yielded positive results. However, he stressed the urgent need to construct new and sustainable drainage systems to permanently address recurring floods that have caused loss of life and destruction of property in the capital.

The Ministry of Finance outlined the planned financial investments for the project, the responsibilities of the Federal Government of Somalia, and the level of support provided by the World Bank for this large-scale national initiative, which is also being implemented in several cities across the country.

In addition, the Ministries of Blue Economy, Aviation and Air Transport, Internal Security, and Defense—each playing a key role in the project—presented reports on how ongoing national activities intersect with the Waterway Project and how effective coordination can be ensured.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre emphasized the importance of restoring the beauty and resilience of the capital through the rehabilitation of old waterways and the establishment of modern, high-quality drainage systems. He directed the relevant institutions to urgently implement the project, underlining its strategic importance to Mogadishu.

The Mogadishu Waterway Project is of national significance, with a direct impact on public safety, hygiene, and sustainable urban development. It plays a critical role in preventing floods, reducing waterborne diseases, protecting the environment, and safeguarding key economic infrastructure such as roads, residential areas, and commercial centers.

The Federal Government of Somalia reaffirmed its full commitment to ensuring the successful and effective implementation of the project, with the goal of transforming Mogadishu into a modern capital that is safe, resilient, and ready for investment.
