BEIJING, China – The People’s Republic of China has expressed “grave concern” following the announcement that Israel has formally recognized the Somaliland region as an independent state. Speaking at a Regular Press Conference on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian firmly rejected the move, declaring it a violation of the fundamental principles of international law.
Addressing a question regarding the joint declaration of mutual recognition signed between Israeli and Somaliland officials, Mr. Lin stated that China is “firmly against” the decision. He emphasized that, according to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Somaliland remains an “inalienable part of Somalia’s territory”.
The Spokesperson reaffirmed Beijing’s unwavering diplomatic stance, stating that China “firmly supports Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity and opposes any move to split its territory”. He noted that the Chinese government had taken note of the immediate rejection issued by the Federal Republic of Somalia, as well as the strong condemnations from regional bodies including the African Union, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Beijing further characterized the issue of the northern region as “entirely Somalia’s internal affair” that must be resolved by the Somali people in accordance with their national constitution. The Ministry issued a stern warning to external actors, stating that countries outside the region “should stop unwarranted interference” and refrain from seeking “selfish interests by aiding and abetting separatism in other countries”.
Concluding his remarks on the matter, Mr. Lin urged the authorities in Hargeisa to “stop at once their separatist activities and collusion with external forces,” signaling China’s commitment to preserving the political stability of the Horn of Africa.
