JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed its strong condemnation and categorical rejection of the recognition by Israel, the occupying power, of the Somaliland region as an independent state. In an official statement released on Friday, the Organization characterized the move as a flagrant violation of the sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The General Secretariat reaffirmed its full solidarity with the Federal Republic of Somalia during this critical juncture. It emphasized unwavering support for the nation’s sovereignty and the unity of its lands, while declaring absolute backing for Somalia’s legitimate state institutions. The OIC described the recognition as an infringement that contravenes established diplomatic norms and the rights of a sovereign member state.
Furthermore, the statement stressed the necessity of strict adherence to the principles enshrined in the Charter of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Charter of the United Nations, and international law. The OIC noted that these legal frameworks collectively mandate respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states, principles that have been disregarded by the Israeli announcement.
Concluding its address, the Organization highlighted the strategic importance of the Horn of Africa. It stressed the urgent need to maintain security, peace, and stability in the region, firmly rejecting any procedures or unilateral actions that could undermine regional stability or fuel fragmentation in this vital corridor.
