MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC), Mr. Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, has declared that the commission is fully prepared to administer the historic local council elections scheduled for tomorrow. In a decisive statement aimed at reassuring the public, the Chairman confirmed that all logistical and operational arrangements have been finalized across the Benadir region.
“We are prepared on all sides, and the security of the citizens voting is secured,” Chairman Abdikarim stated, addressing concerns regarding safety and organization. His assurance comes as the capital enters a critical phase, with the electoral body working in close coordination with national security agencies to guarantee a peaceful voting environment.
To support the commission’s readiness, the Somali Police Force has implemented a rigorous security plan. Police Commissioner Brigadier General Asad Osman Abdullahi has ordered a restriction on vehicular movement in Mogadishu for election day to ensure the safety of voters and the smooth transport of sensitive electoral materials. The police have been deployed to all 16 districts to secure polling stations and assist vulnerable voters, including the elderly and persons with disabilities.
The NIEBC also confirmed that the voter registration drive and political campaigning have officially concluded, with a strict “silence day” in effect today. This allows the electorate a period of reflection before casting their ballots in what is described as the first direct, one-person, one-vote local election in Mogadishu in over 50 years.
Chairman Abdikarim urged all registered voters to turn out in large numbers, emphasizing that their participation is vital for the city’s democratic transformation. He reiterated that the commission is committed to a transparent and fair process, underpinned by the robust security measures now in place.
