MOGADISHU, Somalia – The distribution of voter registration cards has officially concluded in the Benadir region as the capital enters the final stage of preparation for the local council elections scheduled for December 25. The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) confirmed that the window for citizens to collect their voting credentials has closed, marking the completion of the pre-election administrative phase.
Parallel to the end of registration, the vibrant political campaigns led by various associations vying for municipal seats have also ceased. The electoral commission announced that Wednesday constitutes a mandatory “silence day,” prohibiting any further campaign activities or political rallies. This regulation is designed to provide a calm environment for the electorate to reflect before heading to the polls.
NIEBC Chairman Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan stated that no campaigning would be permitted on Wednesday. He further indicated that the commission is preparing to release the official data regarding the total number of eligible voters who successfully collected their cards, a figure that will determine the final voter roll for the election.
The commission has dedicated significant time and resources to operationalize this direct public vote. The event is regarded as a historic milestone, as it represents the first time in over half a century that the general public in Somalia will participate in a direct election to choose their local representatives.
