Somalia Issues Urgent Warning as Diphtheria Infects Over 1,000 Children and Claims 50 Lives

Mogadishu(SONNA)-Somalia’s Ministry of Health and Human Services has issued a strong public warning after confirming that more than 1,000 children in Benadir region have been infected by diphtheria, a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease. Health officials also reported that 50 children have died as a result of the outbreak, most of them unvaccinated.

In a press release, the Ministry said this year’s surge in diphtheria cases represents one of the most serious health threats facing children, urging families to take immediate action by ensuring vaccination for all children between six months and 14 years.

The Ministry announced that a mass diphtheria vaccination campaign in Benadir will begin on Monday, December 15–26, 2025, with services available at hospitals, health centers, schools, and mobile clinics throughout the region. The campaign aims to halt the spread of the disease and protect vulnerable children who have not received their full immunization.

Health authorities stressed that diphtheria is preventable and warned that without widespread vaccination, the number of infections and deaths could continue to rise. Parents and caregivers were urged to cooperate with health workers, seek medical care immediately if symptoms appear, and avoid delaying vaccinations.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and called on community leaders, educators, and local organizations to help spread awareness about the outbreak and the urgent need for vaccination.
