Somalia Welcomes First Cohort of Sudanese Students on Government Scholarships to Strengthen Educational Ties

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Minister of Education, Culture, and Higher Education of the Federal Government of Somalia officially presided over a welcoming ceremony today for a group of students from the Republic of Sudan. These students constitute the first recipients of a new scholarship program funded by the Somali government, designed to enable them to pursue their higher education at the Somali National University.

This initiative marks a significant moment in the bilateral relations between the two nations, symbolizing a reversal of roles in a historic partnership. For decades, Sudan was a primary destination for Somali students seeking higher education during Somalia’s most difficult years. Today, the Federal Government of Somalia is extending that same hand of solidarity to Sudanese youth, ensuring their academic journeys continue despite the challenges facing their home country.

During the reception, the Minister emphasized that the government and the people of Somalia hold the historical and brotherly relationship with Sudan in the highest regard. He noted that Sudan’s past support for Somalia remains an “unforgettable debt of gratitude” and a defining feature of the bond between the two peoples. By offering these educational opportunities, Somalia aims to honor that shared history while investing in the future leaders of Sudan.

The students will be integrated into various faculties at the Somali National University, the country’s premier public institution. The Ministry of Education confirmed that the group welcomed today is merely the first batch. In the coming weeks, additional cohorts of Sudanese students are scheduled to arrive in Mogadishu to begin their studies, further cementing the deep-rooted cooperation between the two sisterly nations.

This scholarship program highlights Somalia’s growing capacity to contribute to regional stability and development through soft power and educational diplomacy.
