Somalia Formally Joins International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) at IMO Council Session in London

LONDON, United Kingdom – The Federal Republic of Somalia has officially acceded to the Convention on the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), marking a significant milestone in the nation’s maritime safety and technological integration.

The Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, H.E. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, formally deposited the instrument of accession during a meeting with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Arsenio Dominguez. The handover took place on the sidelines of the 34th Regular Session of the IMO Assembly currently underway in London.

This strategic move demonstrates the Federal Government of Somalia’s dedication to enhancing maritime security and fostering international cooperation. By joining IMSO, Somalia gains access to critical global satellite communication systems that are essential for maritime safety, search and rescue operations, and the monitoring of shipping activities within its territorial waters.

The high-level meeting was also attended by key Somali officials, including the General Manager of Mogadishu Port, Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Americo), and Somalia’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, H.E. Abdulkadir Abdi Hashi.

Discussions with Secretary-General Dominguez focused on how this new partnership will bolster the security of Somali waters. The delegation explored avenues for modernizing Somalia’s maritime institutions, strengthening legal frameworks governing the coast, and leveraging IMSO’s capabilities to protect the country’s vast marine resources.

The accession is part of a broader government strategy to reclaim and secure Somalia’s maritime domain, ensuring safe passage for international trade while developing a robust national blue economy.
