RABAT, MOROCCO—The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards 2025 ceremony in Rabat, Morocco, delivered a night of unprecedented recognition for Somali football as its top official, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, was named the CAF Men’s Referee of the Year. This monumental victory places a Somali name at the absolute summit of continental football officiating, a compelling source of national and regional celebration.

Omar Abdulkadir Artan’s triumph over a highly competitive field, including other nominated referees from across the continent, is a definitive vindication of his consistently excellent performance and rigorous professional standards throughout the review period. His selection as the best male referee is particularly poignant, as it follows a career marked by groundbreaking achievements, including his historic role as the first Somali referee to take charge of a continental final, overseeing the African Champions League fixture in Cairo. Furthermore, his distinction arrives shortly after he was selected as the first Somali referee to officiate at the FIFA World Cup, further cementing his status as a trailblazer for Somali sports.

The award, which reflects the views of technical committees and officials across the continent, underscores the rising credibility of refereeing from the East African CECAFA Zone, where his work has been hailed as a milestone. Artan has long spoken about the immense pride he carries for his nation, stating that the sense of duty and the national flag’s symbolic weight consistently drive him to perform at his best, dedicating his achievements to the unwavering support of the Somali people worldwide. His victory signals a pivotal moment for the development of football in Somalia, providing a beacon of aspiration for young people aiming for excellence outside of the traditional playing categories.

The CAF Awards 2025 gala was a majestic affair, convening African football’s royalty to honour the standout individuals and teams that dominated the year. The ceremony highlighted the increasing prominence and professionalism of African football on the global stage, with key awards showcasing talent from across the continent:

  • Men’s Player of the Year: Achraf Hakimi (Morocco) claimed the most coveted prize after a sensational season.

  • Women’s Player of the Year: Ghizlane Chebbak (Morocco) was crowned the best female player, leading a celebratory night for the host nation.

  • Top Team Honours: The Morocco U20 side earned the Men’s National Team of the Year award, celebrating their recent FIFA U-20 World Cup victory, while the Nigeria Super Falcons were named the Women’s National Team of the Year.

  • Interclub Success: The Men’s Club of the Year award went to Pyramids FC (Egypt), following their major continental triumph.

  • Referee Recognition: The recognition in officiating also extended to Uganda’s Shamirah Nabadda, who was named the Women’s Referee of the Year.

The event, which also included the presentation of the CAF President’s Outstanding Achievement Award to three East African heads of state for their governmental support of football, powerfully reinforced the narrative of a continent uniting behind its shared passion for the sport. It was a night of collective ambition, with Omar Abdulkadir Artan’s historic victory standing out as a testament to the fact that African excellence spans every aspect of the beautiful game.
