MOGADISHU – The Director General of the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism, Abdullahi Hayir, has highlighted the critical role of the tourism sector in Somalia’s economic revival. Speaking on the weekly TV show “Kulanka Toddobaadka,” Mr. Hayir articulated a clear vision, stating that an increase in tourism would lead directly to national economic growth and a significant increase in employment opportunities for the Somali people.

Mr. Hayir detailed how a vibrant tourism sector creates a powerful ripple effect throughout the economy. He explained that a rise in visitors would stimulate demand for a wide range of services, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and transportation services. Beyond the immediate impact, he pointed out that local craftspeople and small businesses would also flourish as tourists seek out unique goods and experiences. This interconnected growth is vital for diversifying the nation’s economy and creating a more sustainable foundation for prosperity.

The Director General also touched upon the different facets of Somalia’s tourism potential, including the country’s extensive and beautiful coastline. He emphasized that the government is dedicated to creating a secure and welcoming environment, which is the cornerstone of any successful tourism initiative. The Ministry’s efforts are focused on working with stakeholders to establish the necessary infrastructure and policies that can attract both domestic and international visitors.

The commitment to developing the tourism sector is part of a broader national strategy to unlock Somalia’s full economic potential. By facilitating a conducive environment for tourism, the government aims to generate new streams of revenue and create thousands of jobs, particularly for the nation’s youth. The Director General’s remarks serve as a powerful signal of the government’s focus on harnessing non-traditional sectors to drive long-term development.
