Montreal, Canada – A high-level Somali delegation has concluded a series of significant meetings with the World Bank and the government of Qatar. The discussions, held on the sidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) General Assembly in Montreal, Canada, signal a new chapter for the nation’s air transport sector.

Led by the State Minister of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, Abdikariim Abdow Haydar, the delegation’s primary focus was to secure technical support and cooperation to modernize Somalia’s aviation infrastructure and regulatory framework. The meetings represent a powerful stride toward aligning the country’s aviation standards with international norms, paving the way for enhanced safety, efficiency, and growth.

The delegation’s meeting with World Bank officials centered on advancing civil aviation services and air traffic management within Somalia. A key point of discussion was the provision of technical support to fortify the country’s aviation laws and regulations. This partnership is poised to provide the necessary expertise to rebuild a sector vital for economic development and connectivity. The collaboration aims to create a robust and secure aviation environment that can meet the demands of modern air travel and trade.

In a separate but equally pivotal meeting, the Somali delegation engaged in productive talks with representatives from the Qatari government. The discussions culminated in the signing of a cooperation agreement in the field of civil aviation. This bilateral accord is designed to enhance collaboration in critical areas such as air traffic management, professional training, and the development of civil aviation services. The agreement reflects a commitment from both nations to foster a closer relationship and leverage shared expertise for mutual benefit.

According to Ahmed Moallin Hassan, the Director-General of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority, these meetings demonstrate Somalia’s dedication to reasserting its role on the international stage. “These engagements in Montreal are a clear indication of Somalia’s commitment to aligning with international standards and strengthening its cooperation with global organizations and friendly nations,” Hassan stated. He emphasized that the outcomes of these meetings will be instrumental in bolstering Somalia’s international standing in the aviation sector. The collaborative efforts are expected to facilitate significant improvements in the country’s air transport system, attracting greater investment and fostering regional connectivity.
