Mogadishu, Somalia – The European Union’s Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, has initiated a new engagement series aimed at fostering open and continuous dialogue with the Somali press. The inaugural “Meet the EU Ambassador” event brought together a diverse group of Somali journalists for a focused discussion on the European Union’s role in the country and methods for effective collaboration with the media.
The meeting, hosted by Ambassador Di Mauro, centered on key aspects of EU engagement in Somalia, from development projects to security initiatives. Discussions also explored the varied perspectives within the Somali media landscape and emphasized the importance of a transparent and mutually beneficial working relationship. The event sets a new precedent for regular, structured communication designed to enhance understanding and cooperation between the EU and the local press corps.
This new series of meetings is seen as a commitment to moving beyond traditional press releases and one-off briefings. By launching a regular platform for dialogue, the EU aims to build a more robust and trusting relationship with the media, which is crucial for informing the public about joint initiatives and for reflecting on the diverse narratives shaping Somalia’s progress. The initiative is a strategic effort to ensure that the EU’s work in Somalia is communicated clearly and is subject to open scrutiny, thereby strengthening democratic principles and accountability.
