Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Director of Mogadishu Port, Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur “Ameriko,” hosted a farewell ceremony for the players and management of Dekedaha Football Club as they departed Somalia to participate in the CAF (Confederation of African Football) tournament in Kenya.
During the event, the Port Director expressed full support for the team and encouraged the players to represent the name and flag of Somalia with honor.
“Dekedaha represents the name of our nation, and we are committed to supporting every team that uplifts Somalia’s reputation,” Ambassador Ameriko said.
Drawing from his experience as Somalia’s former Ambassador to Kenya, he recalled the strong diaspora support when the Somali national team visited Nairobi, highlighting a friendly match that ended in a 1-1 draw and received remarkable media attention in Kenya.
“The next day, Kenyan newspapers wrote commentaries expressing surprise at how Somali fans filled the stadium. One headline read: ‘Is this Nairobi or Mogadishu?’” he recounted.
Ambassador Ameriko praised the enduring support of the Somali diaspora for the national team and stressed the importance of unity and patriotism in standing behind Somali players who carry the nation’s pride on the international stage.
