Kenya Reaffirms Commitment to Somalia’s Peace and Security at Diplomatic Briefing

NAIROBI, KENYA – Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to the pursuit of lasting peace and stability in Somalia, particularly through its participation in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The statement was made by H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Kenya, during a diplomatic briefing on September 11, 2025.

The briefing detailed Kenya’s foreign policy objectives and engagements, with a specific focus on its role in regional peace and security. Dr. Mudavadi highlighted that Kenya’s participation in AUSSOM is central to its commitment to supporting lasting peace in Somalia while simultaneously addressing cross-border threats posed by Al-Shabaab elements.

Furthermore, the Kenyan government used the platform to appeal for critical international support for the AUSSOM mission. The briefing emphasized the need for predictable and sustainable international financing, coupled with robust logistical support and force enablers to strengthen AUSSOM’s operational effectiveness. Kenya formally appealed to all diplomatic corps present to consider extending their support to the mission.

This strong statement from Kenya’s foreign policy leader reinforces the deep-rooted partnership between the two neighboring countries. It highlights Kenya’s recognition that its own security and stability are intrinsically linked to the peace and security of Somalia. The call for international funding also brings to light the ongoing financial challenges faced by the mission, a concern that has been discussed by various partners, including the AU Peace and Security Council.

Kenya’s active role in the mission, which succeeded ATMIS on January 1, 2025, is viewed as a crucial part of the collective effort to empower the Somali security forces and enable a gradual transition of security responsibilities to the Somali government. The country remains a key partner in the fight against terrorism and a steadfast supporter of Somalia’s state-building efforts. The appeal for greater international backing serves as a powerful reminder that achieving peace and stability in Somalia requires sustained and collective global action.
